Russian Federation — Modern Russia (1997 — to present)
Modern Russia is the money after the redenomination of 1998, when a thousand old roubles became one new rouble. The coins and banknotes of the 1997 pattern are still in circulation.
The circulation coins are the 1, 5, 10 and 50 kopecks and the 1, 2 and 5 roubles of the 1997 pattern; in 2009 a 10-rouble coin was added. The metal was gradually cheapened: kopecks and roubles moved to brass- or nickel-plated steel. The banknotes of the 1997 pattern run from 5 to 1,000 roubles; later came the 5,000 roubles (2006) and the 200 and 2,000 roubles (2017). The designs are updated from time to time with new security features — such issues are called modifications.
Most of the period is commemorative and collector coins. The Bank of Russia issues 10-rouble coins in the series "Ancient Towns of Russia", "Russian Federation", "Cities of Military Glory" and "Cities of Labour Valour", 25-rouble coins, and silver and gold coins — from small ones to one-kilogram pieces.
