Special facts
Staraya Russa in the Novgorod Region is first mentioned in the chronicles in 1167. The town grew up around salt springs: salt was boiled here for centuries, a mud spa has operated since the 19th century, and Fyodor Dostoevsky lived and wrote in Staraya Russa. The 10-rouble coin "Staraya Russa" was issued in 2002 in the "Ancient Towns of Russia" series.
