Special facts
Kostroma on the Volga has been known since the mid-12th century. Its best-known landmark is the Ipatiev Monastery, from which Mikhail Romanov was called to the throne in 1613. The centre keeps its 18th–19th-century trading rows, and at the Shchelykovo estate in the Kostroma region Alexander Ostrovsky wrote “The Snow Maiden”. The 10-rouble coin "Kostroma" was issued in 2002 in the "Ancient Towns of Russia" series.
About the period
