Special facts

Leningrad is a Hero City: 872 days of blockade, from 8 September 1941 to 27 January 1944, with its link to the mainland kept open across the ice of Lake Ladoga — the Road of Life. Leningrad was among the first to be named a Hero City in 1945, together with Stalingrad, Sevastopol and Odessa. This 2-rouble coin honouring the Hero City of Leningrad was issued in 2000 for the 55th anniversary of Victory.

About the period
