Special facts

Smolensk is a Hero City: the Battle of Smolensk in the summer of 1941 held up the German advance on Moscow for two months. Smolensk was given the title of Hero City in 1985, and the fighting of 1941 showed that the Blitzkrieg could be stopped. This 2-rouble coin honouring the Hero City of Smolensk was issued in 2000 for the 55th anniversary of Victory.

About the period

Modern Russia is the money after the redenomination of 1998, when a thousand old roubles became one new rouble. The coins and banknotes of the 1997 pattern are still in circulation. More about the period “Modern Russia”, 1997 — to present
