Special facts

Derbent in Dagestan is one of the oldest towns in Russia: its Naryn-Kala fortress and the town walls that closed the narrow passage between the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian Sea were built in the 6th century. The very name Derbent means “locked gates” in Persian. The 10-rouble coin "Derbent" was issued in 2002 in the "Ancient Towns of Russia" series.

About the period

Modern Russia is the money after the redenomination of 1998, when a thousand old roubles became one new rouble. The coins and banknotes of the 1997 pattern are still in circulation. More about the period “Modern Russia”, 1997 — to present
