Special facts
The Sakhalin Region is the only region of Russia that lies entirely on islands — Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. Its centre is Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Sakhalin is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Tartary; in 1890 Anton Chekhov travelled the island and wrote the book “Sakhalin Island”. The 10-rouble coin "Sakhalin Region" was issued in 2006 in the "Russian Federation" series.
About the period
Modern Russia is the money after the redenomination of 1998, when a thousand old roubles became one new rouble. The coins and banknotes of the 1997 pattern are still in circulation. More about the period “Modern Russia”, 1997 — to present
