Special facts
Mtsensk in the Oryol Region is first mentioned in 1146. Nikolai Leskov made the town famous with his story "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District". Dmitri Shostakovich wrote the opera “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” after Leskov’s story, one of the best-known Russian operas of the 20th century. The 10-rouble coin "Mtsensk" was issued in 2005 in the "Ancient Towns of Russia" series.
