Special facts

Belgorod grew out of a fortress built in 1596 on the southern border of the Muscovite state to guard against Crimean Tatar raids. The town stands on chalk hills, which gave it its name ("white town"). Today Belgorod stands at the confluence of the Vezelka and the Seversky Donets. The 10-rouble coin "Belgorod" was issued in 2006 in the "Ancient Towns of Russia" series.

About the period

Modern Russia is the money after the redenomination of 1998, when a thousand old roubles became one new rouble. The coins and banknotes of the 1997 pattern are still in circulation. More about the period “Modern Russia”, 1997 — to present
