Russian Federation — Bank of Russia (1992 — 1996)

The coins and banknotes of the Bank of Russia of 1992–1996 were the first money of the Russian Federation. They were issued in years of high inflation: denominations grew fast, and the metal of the coins got cheaper.

The coins of 1992–1993 from 1 to 100 roubles were struck at the Moscow and Leningrad mints; they are told apart by the letters М and Л or ММД and ЛМД. Some denominations were already made of steel clad with brass or copper-nickel. At the same time commemorative coins and series in silver, gold, platinum and palladium were issued — "Red Book", "Russian Ballet", "Exploration and Development of Siberia" and others.

The first Bank of Russia notes were the 5,000 and 10,000 roubles of 1992, followed by the banknotes of the 1993 and 1995 patterns from 100 to 500,000 roubles; the 1993 notes show the Moscow Kremlin, the 1995 notes views of Russian cities. The redenomination of 1998 replaced this money with roubles of the 1997 pattern.
