Special facts
The greater flamingo is a bird of salt lakes and lagoons; on the territory of the former USSR it nests in only a few places. The pink colour of its plumage comes from carotenoids in the small crustaceans it eats, and large colonies nest on Lake Tengiz in Kazakhstan. The 50-rouble coin "Flamingo" was issued in 1994 in the "Red Book" series.
About the period
The coins and banknotes of the Bank of Russia of 1992–1996 were the first money of the Russian Federation. They were issued in years of high inflation: denominations grew fast, and the metal of the coins got cheaper. More about the period “Bank of Russia”, 1992 — 1996
