Special facts
The European bison is the largest land mammal in Europe; it died out in the wild in the early 20th century and was restored from animals kept in zoos. Today free herds of bison live in the Belovezha Forest, in the Caucasus and in European Russia. The 50-rouble coin "European Bison" was issued in 1994 in the "Red Book" series.
