Special facts
The 5 roubles from the 1996 set for the tercentenary of the Russian fleet is dedicated to the training fleet and the sail training ship Tovarishch. The training fleet prepares future seamen: cadets serve their practice on sailing ships, as in the 18th century. The navy itself dates from 1696, when Peter I reached the sea at Azov.
About the period
The coins and banknotes of the Bank of Russia of 1992–1996 were the first money of the Russian Federation. They were issued in years of high inflation: denominations grew fast, and the metal of the coins got cheaper. More about the period “Bank of Russia”, 1992 — 1996
