Special facts

The 10 roubles from the 1996 set for the tercentenary of the Russian fleet is dedicated to the merchant fleet. The Russian navy dates from 20 October 1696, when the Boyar Duma, at Peter I’s insistence, resolved: “There shall be seagoing ships.” Vessels under the Russian flag sailed before that, but the country gained a permanent seagoing merchant fleet only when it reached the Baltic in the 18th century.

About the period

The coins and banknotes of the Bank of Russia of 1992–1996 were the first money of the Russian Federation. They were issued in years of high inflation: denominations grew fast, and the metal of the coins got cheaper. More about the period “Bank of Russia”, 1992 — 1996
