In 1595–1602 the architect Fyodor Kon surrounded the town with a stone fortress wall, and the 17th–18th-century Assumption Cathedral rises above the Dnieper. In 1609–1611 the city held out for almost two years against a Polish siege. The 10-rouble coin "Smolensk (9th century)" was issued in 2008 in the "Ancient Towns of Russia" series.
