Credit notes of Alexander III
State Credit Notes of the State Bank in the reign of Alexander III (1881–1894). The notes of the 1866 pattern (1, 3, 5, 10 and 100 roubles) carry the monogram of Alexander III, were printed with the dates 1882–1886 and were taken out of use at the start of 1893. The notes of the new 1887 pattern entered circulation in 1888–1889 and, after the Witte reform, continued to be issued with a changed exchange text. The notes were signed by the manager of the bank (Tsimsen, then Zhukovsky, from 1894 Pleske) and a cashier, and printed by the Expedition for the Preparation of State Papers in Saint Petersburg.
Appearance
The "funtovka": a twenty-five-rouble note without a monogram, named after the English pound notes it imitates. Printed on one side on yellowish paper with rounded corners, the back blank. Watermark: a portrait of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the first portrait watermark on Russian banknotes. Size 192 × 128 mm. It entered circulation in 1881; the dates 1882, 1884 and 1886 fall in the reign of Alexander III. From 1 January 1890 it was exchanged one for one for the new-pattern notes. It won an award at the 1878 Paris world fair.
