Special facts

The 1887 ruble design with a portico on four columns lived for thirty years: with a different monogram and text it was printed until 1917.

Appearance

A 1-rouble note of the new 1887 pattern, brown and blue on white paper. The front has an architectural composition of four columns with a portico, the Small State Emblem of 1883 and the monogram of Alexander III in a round crowned frame. The back is filled by a large stylised figure 1 with the word "РУБЛЬ" running diagonally. The watermark is a pattern of rhombuses made of light and dark triangles. Issued from 15 October 1889; dates 1887, 1889, 1890, 1892 and 1894; size 142 × 83 mm.

About the period

The credit notes of 1887–1896 were the last issues before the Witte currency reform, while the paper rouble was still promised to be exchanged for silver or gold coin. The new designs appeared under Alexander III, and in 1895–1896 they were printed with the monogram of Nicholas II. More about the period “State credit notes”, 1887 — 1896
