Special facts

The three-ruble design with three columns outlived a change of reign and of text and was printed until the new note of 1905 appeared.

Appearance

A 3-rouble note of the 1887 pattern on white paper with silk fibres, in beige, brown, blue and green. Three columns of different shapes carry a portico edged with micro-text "ТРИ РУБЛЯ"; there are the Small State Emblem of 1883 and the monogram of Alexander III. The watermark is a series of alternating dark and light vertical bands with a wide central band reading "3 р 3 р". Size 150 × 93 mm; dates 1887, 1889, 1890, 1892 and 1894; issued from 15 October 1889.

About the period

The credit notes of 1887–1896 were the last issues before the Witte currency reform, while the paper rouble was still promised to be exchanged for silver or gold coin. The new designs appeared under Alexander III, and in 1895–1896 they were printed with the monogram of Nicholas II. More about the period “State credit notes”, 1887 — 1896
