Special facts
The Russian Empire never issued thousand-ruble credit notes: the five hundred rubles remained the highest.
Specimens of the 1895 series
Specimen sheets of the 1895 series (Pick A71–A77 and A84) in the denominations 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 roubles, which were never issued for circulation. For collectors they are objects in their own right.
About the period
The credit notes of 1887–1896 were the last issues before the Witte currency reform, while the paper rouble was still promised to be exchanged for silver or gold coin. The new designs appeared under Alexander III, and in 1895–1896 they were printed with the monogram of Nicholas II. More about the period “State credit notes”, 1887 — 1896
