Special facts

The portrait of Dmitry Donskoy is imaginary: no likeness of the prince made in his lifetime survives.

Appearance

A 5-rouble note of the 1866 pattern with the monogram of Alexander III, black text on a blue ground. On the left a shield with a crossed sword and orb under the imperial crown is topped by the state arms, the whole encircled by the chain of the Order of St Andrew. The back has an oval portrait of Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy. Dates 1882 and 1884; size 165 × 96 mm. The watermark is a figured frame with Roman V in the corners and a large light oval. Withdrawn from circulation as of 1 January 1893.

About the period

The State Credit Notes of the 1866 pattern were printed for almost thirty years: first with the monogram of Alexander II, and from 1882 with that of Alexander III. The backs of the higher denominations carry portraits of Russian rulers. More about the period “State credit notes”, 1866 — 1886
