Special facts
In December 1941 Yelets was the scene of the Yelets offensive operation: the liberation of the town was part of the counteroffensive near Moscow. The town on the Bystraya Sosna was sacked more than once: in 1395 it was burned by Tamerlane, whose army went no further into Rus than Yelets. The 10-rouble coin "Yelets" was issued in 2011 in the "Cities of Military Glory" series.
