Special facts
The Nenets Autonomous Area, with its centre in Naryan-Mar, lies beyond the Arctic Circle on the Barents Sea. It is a land of tundra and reindeer herding where oil and gas are produced. Its land held Pustozersk, the first Russian town beyond the Arctic Circle, founded in 1499, where Archpriest Avvakum was burned in 1682. The 10-rouble coin "Nenets Autonomous Okrug" was issued in 2010 in the "Russian Federation" series.
