Around Rzhev in 1942–1943 some of the bloodiest fighting of the war took place — the battles of Rzhev lasted more than a year. Alexander Tvardovsky wrote “I Was Killed near Rzhev” about the fighting, one of the best-known poems about the war. The 10-rouble coin "Rzhev" was issued in 2011 in the "Cities of Military Glory" series.
About the period
