Nicholas I on the fifty-ruble note was the great-grandfather of Nicholas II.
Appearance
The 50-rouble note of 1899 with a portrait of Nicholas I is the only note of Nicholas II's time without a watermark, and the plainest in design and workmanship. Black, light green, green, light brown, orange and blue; size 188 × 118 mm. The same design was printed under four managers, then under the Provisional Government and the Soviets.
About the period
The credit notes of 1898–1899 were issued after the Witte currency reform: the exchange they promise is for gold coin only. The date on the note was not updated — the rouble dated 1898 was printed until 1918 — so it is the manager's signature, not the date, that tells when a note was issued.
