Special facts

From 1897 until the First World War the State Bank exchanged credit notes for gold coin without limit.

Appearance

Three-rouble note of 1898, the 1895 design with the gold-exchange text; printed until the new 3-rouble note of 1905 (introduced in 1907). Beige ground, brown, blue and green print, paper with silk fibres. Watermark: vertical stripes with a repeated "3р". Size 150 × 93 mm.

About the period

The credit notes of 1898–1899 were issued after the Witte currency reform: the exchange they promise is for gold coin only. The date on the note was not updated — the rouble dated 1898 was printed until 1918 — so it is the manager's signature, not the date, that tells when a note was issued.
