Special facts

The note was equal to the gold five-ruble coin, struck from 1897.

Appearance

Five-rouble note of 1898: the vertical 1895 design with the seated figure of Rus, now with the gold-exchange text. Blue dominates, with beige, red and green; the back is blue with four ovals holding female heads. Watermark: a mesh with the figure 5. Size 104 × 174 mm. Printed until the 5-rouble note of 1909.

About the period

The credit notes of 1898–1899 were issued after the Witte currency reform: the exchange they promise is for gold coin only. The date on the note was not updated — the rouble dated 1898 was printed until 1918 — so it is the manager's signature, not the date, that tells when a note was issued.
