During the Great Patriotic War some of the heaviest fighting took place around Rzhev for more than a year; the Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier opened here in 2020. Rzhev was also one of the major centres of the Old Believers. The 10-rouble coin "Rzhev, Tver Region" was issued in 2016 in the "Ancient Towns of Russia" series.
