Special facts

Olonets is the oldest town in Karelia: it is first mentioned in 1137 in a charter of Prince Svyatoslav of Novgorod. In 1649 a fortress was built here to guard against the Swedes. Today it is the centre of a district where the Livvi dialect of Karelian is spoken. A coin of the "Ancient Towns of Russia" series, 2017.
