Special facts
A 1985 rouble for the 115th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Lenin (1870–1924). Lenin headed the first Soviet government, the Council of People’s Commissars, in 1917, and since 1924 his body has rested in the Mausoleum on Red Square. The 1985 anniversary was marked under Mikhail Gorbachev. Some 2 million were struck, as with the Lomonosov rouble.
About the period
The currency reform of 1961 was a 10-to-1 redenomination: from 1 January 1961 old money was exchanged for new money of one tenth the face value. The coins and banknotes of the 1961 pattern circulated until the end of the Soviet Union. More about the period “1961 Monetary Reform”, 1961 — 1991
