Special facts
A 1984 rouble for the 150th anniversary of Dmitri Mendeleev (1834–1907), who discovered the periodic law of the chemical elements. He presented his table in 1869 and predicted the properties of the still undiscovered gallium, scandium and germanium, and element No. 101 is named mendelevium in his honour. Later he headed the Chief Chamber of Weights and Measures in Saint Petersburg.
About the period
The currency reform of 1961 was a 10-to-1 redenomination: from 1 January 1961 old money was exchanged for new money of one tenth the face value. The coins and banknotes of the 1961 pattern circulated until the end of the Soviet Union. More about the period “1961 Monetary Reform”, 1961 — 1991
