Special facts
The National Library building on the front is a rhombicuboctahedron about 73 metres high, designed by Mikhail Vinogradov and Viktor Kramarenko and opened in 2006; in Minsk it is called “the diamond”.
Appearance
Five-hundred-rouble note of the 2009 pattern. The front shows the National Library of Belarus in Minsk; the back a collage on literature: a quill, an inkwell, book covers and a fern leaf. The halftone watermark repeats a fragment of the front image; the windowed metallised security thread is narrow. Size 159 × 72 mm. Dated 2009 and issued on 1 July 2016; it carries the facsimile of Pyotar Prakapovich. Printed by De La Rue, London. Notes from the commemorative set "My Country — Belarus" (1,000 copies) with a special series and number are known.
About the period
The 2009 banknotes spent seven years in storage and entered circulation only on 1 July 2016, at the 10,000-to-1 redenomination, when the rouble received its current code BYN. More about the period “Issue of 2009 (2016 release)”
