Chervonets notes of the State Bank of the USSR (1928)

The 5-chervontsev note is a banknote of the State Bank of the USSR dated 1928, the highest denomination of the gold-backed chervonets series. It states that one chervonets contains 7.74234 grams of pure gold, exchangeable for gold once a special government act sets a start date; the legal text is repeated in the languages of the union republics. The note entered circulation on 1 December 1928. Uniface (blank reverse), designed by Ivan Dubasov, printed by Goznak. It remained in circulation until the 1947 currency reform and was demonetized on 14 December 1947.

Знак подписывало правление Государственного банка СССР — за время выпуска сменилось четыре состава. Первый (серии АУ–БС, 1929) — правление председателя Г. Пятакова (Пятаков, Каценеленбаум, Берлацкий, Аркус, Блюм). Второй (серии АА–АТ, 1928–1929) — правление председателя А. Шейнмана (Шейнман, Каценеленбаум, Морин, Берлацкий, Блюм, Мануйлов). Третий, большой состав (серии БТ–БФ, 1930–1932) — правление М. Калмановича из шести подписей (Калманович, Аркус, Марьясин, Выносов, Карклин, Борьян). Четвёртый, малый состав (серии ВА–ВФ, 1932–1934) — тоже правление Калмановича, но всего четыре подписи (Калманович, Аркус, Горбунов, Козлов). У образца с надпечаткой — подписи второго состава (Шейнмана), у второго вида образца — подписи малого калмановичского состава.

Appearance

Dark blue print: crosshatching along the left edge, the USSR coat of arms at upper left, the denomination at top centre, legal text and signatures at centre, the seal of the State Bank of the USSR and the date at lower left, the denomination on a guilloche ground in a ribbon frame at lower right; the serial number is red on the left, dark blue on the right, printed twice. The watermark is an elaborate wavy design with the figure "5" at centre, "ЧЕРВОНТЦЕВ" below, "СС" to the left and "СР" to the right, "ГОСБАНК" and "1928" at the bottom corners; the reverse is blank. Size: 180 × 105 mm.
