Issue history

The five chervontsev is the highest denomination of the series; in circulation from 1 December 1928. The note is one-sided with a blank back; designed by Ivan Dubasov.

Signatures

Four boards of the State Bank signed the note over its issue. Chairman A. Sheinman's board — series АА–АТ, 1928–1929 (Sheinman, Katsenelenbaum, Morin, Berlatskiy, Blyum, Manuilov). Chairman G. Pyatakov's board — series АУ–БС, 1929 (Pyatakov, Katsenelenbaum, Berlatskiy, Arkus, Blyum). M. Kalmanovich's large six-signature board — series БТ–БФ, 1930–1932 (Kalmanovich, Arkus, Maryasin, Vynosov, Karklin, Boryan). Kalmanovich's small four-signature board — series ВА–ВФ, 1932–1934 (Kalmanovich, Arkus, Gorbunov, Kozlov). The overprinted specimen carries the Sheinman board's signatures, the other specimen those of the small Kalmanovich board.

Appearance

The five chervontsev is printed in dark blue, with hatching along the left edge. At upper left is the USSR arms, at top centre the value, in the centre the text of the law and the signatures, at lower left the seal of the State Bank of the USSR and the date, and at lower right the value on a guilloché ground in a ribbon frame. The number appears twice: red on the left, dark blue on the right. The watermark is an elaborate wavy pattern with the figure "5" and the word "ЧЕРВОНТЦЕВ" in the middle, the letters "СС" on the left and "СР" on the right, and "ГОСБАНК" and "1928" in the bottom corners. The back is blank; size 180 × 105 mm.
