Chervonets notes of the State Bank of the USSR (1924)

The 3-chervontsa note was a banknote of the State Bank of the USSR, the first denomination in this gold-backed series issued by the USSR's own Gosbank rather than by the RSFSR (as the 1922 chervonets were) -- it entered circulation on 15 August 1924. It states that three chervontsa contain 5 zolotnik 42¾ dolya (23.23 g) of pure gold, exchangeable for gold once a special government act sets a start date. Designed by Ivan Dubasov, engraved by Anton Vasyutinsky, printed by Goznak. Specimens are known both perforated "ОБРАЗЕЦ" and with no signatures, serial numbers or seal at all. It remained in circulation until the 1947 currency reform and was demonetized on 14 December 1947.

Signatures

The note was signed by the whole management board of the State Bank of the USSR — the signatures depend on its composition. The first issue (1924, then again 1926-1929) carries chairman A. Sheinman's board (Sheinman, Tumanov, Katsenelenbaum, Mikhelman, Sher); the second (1925, a brief chairmanship of G. Pyatakov between Sheinman's two terms) carries Pyatakov's board (Pyatakov, Katsenelenbaum, Sher, Arkus). The perforated specimen carries the first board's signatures.

Appearance

Black and red print on a multicolour guilloche ground. The obverse shows a farmer sowing at upper left, the USSR coat of arms at centre, the value to the right, the seal of the State Bank of the USSR at lower left, and a red serial number printed twice. The watermark is an ornamental frame with the figure "3" in two circles in all four corners, "ГБ" at top centre, "ТРИ ЧЕРВОНЦА" at centre and "1924" at bottom centre; the reverse is blank. Size: 180 × 105 mm.
