Chervonets notes of the State Bank of the USSR (1928)

The 2-chervontsa note is a banknote of the State Bank of the USSR dated 1928, part of the same gold-backed series as the 1- and 3-chervonets notes (1924, 1926). It states that one chervonets contains 7.74234 grams of pure gold, exchangeable for gold once a special government act sets a start date; the legal text is printed in Russian and repeated in the languages of the union republics (Ukrainian, Belarusian, Georgian, Armenian, plus Arabic script and Tatar). The note was issued on 15 June or in July 1928 (sources disagree on the exact date), designed by Ivan Dubasov, printed by Goznak on unwatermarked paper. A version circulating in the Tuvan People's Republic carries a special "Имеет хождение только в Т.Н.Р." overprint -- not catalogued here as its own row. It remained in circulation until the 1947 currency reform and was demonetized on 14 December 1947.

Пятакова (Пятаков, Шер, Каценеленбаум, Морин). Второй (серии АА–ЕВ, 1928–1929) — правление председателя А. Шейнмана (Шейнман, Каценеленбаум, Спунде, Морин, Шер). Третий (серии ИВ–КУ, 1930–1931) — правление М. Калмановича и Л. Марьясина (Калманович, Карклин, Кирпонт, Марьясин). Четвёртый (серии ЛЕ–ЯЯ и далее, 1932–1936) — тоже правление Калмановича (Калманович, Горбунов, Аркус, Выносов). У образца с надпечаткой «ОБРАЗЕЦ»/«НЕПЛАТЕЖНЫЙ» — подписи второго состава (Шейнмана), у второго вида образца — подписи третьего (Калмановича/Карклина).

Appearance

Dark green and black obverse print: the denomination on a guilloche ground twice at the top edges, the USSR coat of arms at top centre, legal text in cartouches on both sides and at centre (with Tatar text at the bottom too), signatures at lower right; the serial number is red on the left, black on the right, printed twice. The reverse is multicolour print: an ornamental frame, the denomination on a guilloche ground in all four corners, the value in six languages on either side of centre, the date at bottom centre. No watermark. Size: 158 × 88 mm.
