Issue history

The sixty-ruble note is the highest of the three denominations (15, 30 and 60 rubles) of the second series of 1919 settlement notes, introduced by a decree of the Council of People's Commissars of 21 October 1919. The reverse, with the RSFSR coat of arms at the center, was printed by the Orlov method. Print run: 67 million. Withdrawal began in mid-1921; a decree of 28 June 1922 ended the issue, and until 1 November 1922 the notes were exchanged for 1922-series rubles at 10,000 to 1.

Blocks, cashiers and factories

Every note carries two signatures: Chief Commissioner of the People's Bank G. Pyatakov (the same on all) and one of the cashiers. The note was printed by three Goznak factories, and the block number shows which one: the First Moscow factory printed blocks АА-001…020, Penza АА-053…069 and Perm (the Urals) АА-100…129. Within each factory the cashier is set by the block number and repeats in rotation. Each block is 1,000,000 notes, 67 blocks and 67,000,000 notes in all; varieties are distinguished by the combination of cashier and factory.

Sheets, error and specimens

The notes were printed in sheets of 10 (2 × 5). A full sheet is worth more than single notes (Denisov catalogue: К3-6л). A printing error is known: the reverse printed upside down. Specimens are perforated «ОБРАЗЕЦЪ».

Appearance

The paper carries a watermark of large six-pointed stars over its entire area. The front is blue-black on a pale blue-grey ground; the back is multicolor on a red background, with the RSFSR coat of arms in the center.
