Issue history

The 5,000-ruble note is one of the largest "Babylonian notes" of the second 1919 series. Blue print on a yellow multicolor ground; the reverse carries the RSFSR coat of arms and the slogan "Workers of the world, unite" in seven languages. It is dated 1919 but came out on 4 March 1920. The series run from АА to ГР, all from the First Moscow Goznak factory; the number — two series letters and six digits — is printed twice on the front. The note could be exchanged for 1922-series rubles at 10,000 to 1 until 1 November 1922.

Cashiers and series

The note carries two signatures: that of the People’s Commissar of Finance N. Krestinsky (the same on all) and one of eight cashiers. Unlike the lower values, the cashier depends not on the last block digit but on the series letters, so the varieties are described by series ranges; neighbouring cashiers share boundary series.

Watermarks and specimens

The standard watermark is broad waves, found with every cashier (Pick 105a). Narrow waves are known with three cashiers — Ovchinnikov, Chikhirzhin and Bubyakin (105b) — and stars with three as well: Ovchinnikov, Baryshev and Bubyakin (105c). Specimens are perforated «ОБРАЗЕЦЪ».

Appearance

Blue is the dominant color of the note. On the front the blue print sits over a yellow multicolor ground, while the reverse bears the RSFSR coat of arms at its center. Size: 166 × 118 mm.
