Special facts
At the rate of Kankrin’s reform, three and a half assignat rubles to one silver ruble, this note was worth less than fifteen silver rubles in 1843.
Appearance
A 50-rouble assignat of the second type. On the front the number is at the top, with two embossed ovals beneath it: on the left a harbour with flags, cannon, a double-headed eagle and the arched motto "ПОКОИТЪ И ОБОРОНЯЕТЪ", on the right a rock over the sea inscribed "НЕВРЕДИМА". Between the ovals are the figure of the value and the bank's promise "ОБЪЯВИТЕЛЮ СЕЙ ГОСУДАРСТВЕННОЙ АССИГНАЦIИ ПЛАТИТЪ АССИГНАЦIОННЫЙ БАНКЪ … ХОДЯЧЕЮ МОНЕТОЮ". The back is marked "Сов. пр. б." (the bank's governing board) with a handwritten signature that differs from note to note. The embossed paper has watermarks in the corners — the arms of the Tsardoms of Astrakhan, Kazan, Siberia and Moscow. White oblong paper with a landscape front. Size 195 × 130 mm; a date for every year from 1785 to 1818.
About the period
The second-type assignats replaced the first-type notes, which were forged far too often. The design stayed almost the same, but the paper was now coloured, made at a special mill in Tsarskoye Selo. More about the period “Assignats”, 1786 — 1818
