Special facts
A square note is a rare format for Russian money: 142 by 142 millimetres.
Appearance
A 25-rouble assignat prepared for the reform of 1802–1803 and never issued. An intricate square frame with patterns; dark rectangles at the sides spell out "ДВАДЦАТЬ ПЯТЬ". At the top is the early 19th-century arms of the Russian Empire — a crowned double-headed eagle holding sceptre and orb — with the figure 25 below. In the middle runs the text "ОБЪЯВИТЕЛЮ СЕЙ АССИГНАЦIИ ПЛАТИТЪ АССИГНАЦIОННЫЙ БАНКЪ ХОДЯЧЕЮ МОНЕТОЮ … РУБЛЕЙ". On the back is the monogram of the Chief Director of the Assignation Bank, the letters "ГДАБ". Size 142 × 142 mm. Only trial pieces exist; they are held in the Goznak museum.
About the period
The second-type assignats replaced the first-type notes, which were forged far too often. The design stayed almost the same, but the paper was now coloured, made at a special mill in Tsarskoye Selo. More about the period “Assignats”, 1786 — 1818
