Special facts
Around 1817 the assignats in circulation reached 836 million rubles, more than ever before; together with the new pattern, the treasury began buying back and destroying part of the notes.
Appearance
Fifty-rouble assignat of the 1818–1819 pattern: a rectangle with a solid ground carrying all the pictures and texts. At the top the "Masonic" arms, with a shield with the figure 50 under them and plant ornaments at the sides; below it a light rectangle with the text of the promise. The back is a dark rectangle with the figure 50. The first note of this type entered circulation on 20 October 1818; dated every year up to 1843.
About the period
The assignats of the 1818–1819 pattern were the first Russian paper money printed at the Expedition for the Preparation of State Papers. The printing became much better, and the notes harder to forge. More about the period “Assignats”, 1818 — 1843
