The chervonets notes of 1922

The chervonets is the note of the gold-backed currency introduced by the currency reform of 1922. The notes state that a chervonets contains 1 zolotnik 78.24 dolya of pure gold and is exchangeable for gold, with the start of exchange left to a special government act; notes from 3 chervontsa upward were also accepted at face value for taxes payable in gold. The bank notes of the State Bank of the RSFSR were authorised by a decree of the Council of People's Commissars of 11 October 1922 and put into circulation on 27 November 1922. The design is by Vladimir Adrianov, after English pound notes, and they were printed by Goznak. Specimens of every denomination come in two forms: perforated «ОБРАЗЕЦ» and with a red overprint «НЕПЛАТЕЖНЫЙ» and «ОБРАЗЕЦ». The chervonets notes remained in circulation until the monetary reform of 1947.

Signatures

The note is signed by the management board of the State Bank headed by A. Sheinman; one board is known.

Appearance

Black lettering and frame on white paper, with a multicolour guilloché at left (pink, green and blue). At upper left are the state emblem, the inscription «БАНКОВЫЙ БИЛЕТ» and the value in words; a red serial number of two series letters and six digits is printed twice. The paper carries a watermark reading «3 червонца 1922», and the reverse is blank.
