Special facts

The “gold” notes were part of Commissar Sokolnikov’s reform: by the summer of 1924 the sovznaks had left circulation, leaving only stable money in the country.

Appearance

Both sides are printed in black over a yellow, blue-green and red underprint. On the front are the USSR arms at top centre, the value over a sheaf of wheat and a guilloché, and the signatures below. On the back the value sits over a guilloché in the centre, surrounded by the value in words in six languages, with the date at the bottom. The watermark comes in two kinds — narrow (55 mm) and wide (65 mm), each with its own range of serial numbers. Size 155 × 82 mm.

About the period

The treasury notes of the People's Commissariat of Finance of the USSR appeared in 1924, as the sovznaks were being replaced with stable money. The first of them were denominated in "gold roubles". More about the period “State treasury notes”, 1924 — 1928
