State Credit Notes of 1843–1865
The State Credit Notes of the 1843 pattern were introduced in the autumn of 1843 as the last stage of Kankrin's reform: assignats were exchanged for credit notes at a fixed rate, while deposit notes and the notes of the savings treasuries were exchanged one for one. The notes in 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 silver roubles were issued in limited amounts according to the silver in circulation (at first they were about half backed). Each note carries only its year of issue and a number, with no series. The signatures of the manager, the director and the cashier are facsimiles. The 15-rouble note of 1856 remained an unissued trial.
Appearance
Three-rouble credit note of the 1843 pattern on a light green ground. Ornaments of ovals with vignettes and interlocked rings stand at the sides, with the arc "ТРИ РУБ. СЕР." above them; at the top a complex pattern with ovals holding the figure 3 and a shield with the arms, at the bottom an oval cartouche "ТРИ РУБ: СЕРЕБ:" over a Roman III. The back carries an extract from the manifesto and the arms. Watermark: a circle with the figure 3 and the words "КРЕДИТНЫЙ" and "1843 ГОДА". Size 158 × 108 mm; dated 1843, 1847, 1851 and every year from 1854 to 1865. A specimen "ОБРАЗЕЦ" without signatures is known.
