Issue history

The three-rouble small-format note is a "token" type of about 36 × 66 mm (portrait format), closer to a large postage stamp than to a banknote. It was issued under a resolution of the People's Commissariat of Finance of 5 December 1922 as a supplement to the state notes of 1923, at 1:100 — in effect playing the role of kopecks. It is a separate type from the normal-size note of the same face value in the first 1922 issue. It was printed by Goznak and carries no signatures or serial numbers. The note was withdrawn from circulation on 1 November 1923.

Sheets, watermark and specimens

The notes were printed in full sheets of 20 (4 × 5). The paper carries a mosaic-pattern watermark across the note. Specimens: a specimen with a red overprint is known. Modern collector forgeries on paper with a mosaic watermark are also known, including whole sheets.

Appearance

The obverse is dark green on a green underprint: the RSFSR emblem at upper centre, the value below it and legal text at lower centre. The reverse is green, with a pattern across the note. The note measures 36 × 66 mm.
