Special facts

A 1970 rouble for the centenary of the birth of Vladimir Lenin (1870–1924). This is the most plentiful Soviet commemorative rouble, about 100 million coins. Lenin was born on 22 April 1870 in Simbirsk, and the Lenin Memorial opened there for the centenary. A jubilee medal “For Valiant Labour” was instituted at the same time for the centenary of Lenin’s birth.

About the period

The currency reform of 1961 was a 10-to-1 redenomination: from 1 January 1961 old money was exchanged for new money of one tenth the face value. The coins and banknotes of the 1961 pattern circulated until the end of the Soviet Union. More about the period “1961 Monetary Reform”, 1961 — 1991
