Special facts

The “sun rouble” of 1724–1725 is the first rouble of the Saint Petersburg Mint. At the centre of the cross of monograms on the reverse is a dot with rays that looks like the sun, hence the nickname; it comes with the letters “SPB” under the portrait and without them.

About the period

The coins of Peter I belong to the time of the monetary reform that took Russia from small silver "scale" coins to round coins of the modern kind and to decimal reckoning: one rouble equals one hundred kopecks. More about the period “Peter I”, 1700 — 1725
