Special facts
The three-ruble value appeared on Russian paper money for the first time: the assignats had never had it.
Appearance
Three-rouble deposit note of 1840, green print. Large circles imitating coins stand at the sides of a rectangular frame (the central ones carry the figure 3), with the year "1840" and numbered cartouches below. At the top the arms of the 1830 pattern, below a hand-written promise to pay in silver coin. The back carries an extract from the rules on deposits. Watermark: the hand-written words "Депозитной билетъ" with the denomination and the year. Size 112 × 83 mm, in circulation from 27 February 1840. Specimens inscribed "ОБРАЗЕЦЪ" are known.
About the period
The deposit notes were the first step of Kankrin's currency reform. They were meant to replace the depreciated assignats, whose rouble was worth about thirty kopecks in silver. More about the period “Deposit and credit notes”, 1840 — 1841
