Appearance

Both sides are dark blue-black on a multicolour (lilac -- the dominant ground colour --, red, green) ground. The obverse carries a portrait based on Ivan Shadr's sculpture "Red Army Soldier", framed by a five-pointed star, laurel branches, wheat ears, banners, weapons and tools, with a coupon field at left to view the watermark, the USSR coat of arms and the year "1923", and the printed signatures of the People's Commissar of Finance and a cashier; the serial number is printed twice. The reverse has a Greek-key (meander) frame around the value "25000" on a guilloche (brown, red, green) ground, the text repeated in the languages of the union republics, and "ИМЕЕТ ХОЖДЕНИЕ ПО ВСЕЙ ТЕРРИТОРИИ СОЮЗА" on the coupon. Size: 155 × 77 mm.

The Third Rouble tail (1923–1924)

The three highest denominations of the 1923 sovznak series -- 10,000, 15,000 and 25,000 roubles -- were issued not by the RSFSR but by the newly formed People's Commissariat of Finance of the USSR (the USSR itself was proclaimed in December 1922). They are still signed by People's Commissar of Finance G. Sokolnikov, but with a new facsimile; on the 10,000 and 15,000 rouble notes the cashier is determined by the last digit of the serial number (10 cashiers per denomination), on the 25,000 rouble note by specific block numbers (only 4 cashiers). The reverse text is repeated in the languages of the union republics. Printed by the Goznak factory, the paper everywhere carries a watermark of diagonal "windows" divided into four squares. The 10,000 rouble note entered circulation in 1923, the 15,000 rouble note on 18 December 1923, the 25,000 rouble note on 7 February 1924; all three were withdrawn on 31 May 1924, closing out the sovznak era ahead of that year's currency reform. Specimens with perforated and red-overprinted "ОБРАЗЕЦ" are known for the 10,000 and 15,000 rouble notes; only the perforated form is known for the 25,000 rouble note.
