Special facts
The gold 25 roubles of 1876 were struck in just one hundred pieces; they are traditionally linked with the birthday of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich.
Reason for the issue
The coin is traditionally called "in memory of the 30th birthday of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich", although he was born in 1847 and turned 29 in 1876. 100 pieces were struck; it is usually written that the Grand Duke himself ordered them in December 1875.
About the period
The coins of Alexander II belong to the time when small change got cheaper: after the Crimean War silver was leaving circulation, and the fineness of the small silver was lowered first to .750 and in 1867 to .500. The 1867 designs — small silver from 5 to 20 kopecks and copper from 1 to 5 kopecks — were struck unchanged until 1917. More about the period “Alexander II”, 1855 — 1881
