Special facts
Kyrgyzstan’s first commemorative banknote with a design of its own rather than an overprint on an ordinary note: the National Bank issued the 2000 som on 17 November 2017 for the 25th anniversary of independence and of the national currency. The face shows the equestrian monument to Manas against a stylised yurt and the sign of the goddess Umai Ene; the back shows a stylised tree, Khan Tengri peak and a golden eagle soaring over Issyk-Kul. It was a one-off issue and is legal tender, although ATMs and terminals do not take it, and in 2018 it was named the best regional banknote among the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the CIS.
About the period
The issue of 2009–2017 is a new generation of notes from 20 to 5000 som, the small values having been replaced by coins by then. The figures are the same, but the design and security features were updated, and the new 5000 som, with the actor Suimenkul Chokmorov and Ala-Too Square, was released on 2 March 2009.
